ATC One has released Holding Pattern Entries, a new exercise system focused on one of the most error-prone parts of IFR radio work: translating a clearance into the right holding entry and execution strategy.
The system is built for pilots who already know what a hold is, but need repetition under realistic phraseology so that “fly direct to the fix, hold east on the zero-niner-zero radial, left turns” becomes automatic muscle memory—not a last-second guess in the sim or the aircraft.
What you practice
Each scenario presents a holding clearance in authentic ATC structure: identifying fix, inbound course (or radial/bearing), turn direction, and sometimes expect-further-clearance or leg timing cues. Your task is to select the correct entry procedure for your aircraft’s heading and position relative to the hold, consistent with the clearance you received.
Entry types in scope
- Direct entry when your orientation allows you to intercept and join the inbound course with minimal maneuvering.
- Teardrop entry when the geometry requires a planned outbound segment inside the protected side of the hold before joining inbound.
- Parallel entry when initial tracking parallels the inbound course before a turn to establish on the protected side.
The training logic emphasizes why an entry is correct for the scenario—not just matching a label—so review feedback ties back to heading, bearing relationships, and the directional constraints implied by the clearance.
How sessions are structured
Exercises progress from clearer geometries and lighter phrase density to busier clearances and tighter decision windows, including variations in wind and track that affect the sensible entry choice. You can repeat templates with different clearances so the same instructional goal stays fresh.
Why this matters operationally
Mis-identifying an entry under workload drives altitude excursions, wrong-side turns, and confusion on the radio. This mode isolates that decision layer so you can build situational awareness and IFR judgment in a controlled environment, alongside ATC One’s voice, diagram, and quiz-based tools.

Holding Pattern Entries is rolling out as part of the current app release train. Update to the latest version of ATC One on the App Store or Google Play to access the new practice path.
